There are moments that make us particularly proud. Moments when we realise that passion, personal commitment and a genuine love for what we do are being recognised and appreciated.

Today, we are delighted to share one of those special moments with you: We at Der Mallorquiner have been honoured by DO Pla i Llevant in recognition of our commitment to promoting and showcasing the wines of this very special Mallorcan wine region!

For us, this award means so much more than simply receiving a lovely gesture of appreciation. It is a wonderful recognition of our work and our passion for Mallorca, its wine culture and the people who put their hearts and souls into creating exceptional wines.

But what is it that makes this wine region so special?

DO Pla i Llevant – A Wine Region Rich in History, Character and Mediterranean Soul

Stretching across the eastern and central parts of Mallorca, the Pla i Llevant wine region is one of the island’s most fascinating wine-growing areas. Its name roughly translates from Catalan as “Plain and East Coast”, reflecting the landscape and geographical location that define this distinctive wine region.

The region encompasses 18 municipalities and boasts a wine-growing tradition that dates back thousands of years. The Romans were already cultivating vines here, laying the foundations for a wine culture that endured even during the period of Moorish rule in Mallorca.

In 1999, the D.O. Pla i Llevant designation of origin was officially recognised. Since then, the region has developed into one of the leading ambassadors of Mallorcan winemaking.

Today, it represents an impressive blend of traditional knowledge, innovative ideas and the unmistakable character of Mediterranean wines.

The Secret Lies in the Perfect Balance of Climate, Soil and Sea

The vineyards of DO Pla i Llevant are predominantly situated at relatively low altitudes, around 100 metres above sea level. Their proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, abundant hours of sunshine and unique microclimate all shape the conditions in which these distinctive wines are produced.

A particularly important role is played by the so-called “Embat”. This thermal sea breeze brings a refreshing breath of air to the vineyards during the warmer months. It helps cool the vines and has a positive influence on grape ripening. At the same time, the humidity it brings presents winemakers with particular challenges, requiring careful vineyard management and good air circulation between the vines.

The soils also give these wines their distinctive personality. The region is characterised mainly by clay soils rich in limestone. Depending on their composition, they range from reddish hues, created by iron oxides, to lighter, whitish tones resulting from clay, calcium carbonate and magnesium.

These soils provide excellent growing conditions for the vines and allow for good drainage. Combined with the Mediterranean climate, they create a unique terroir that gives the wines of DO Pla i Llevant their own unmistakable character.

The Pla i Llevant Wine Region – From Indigenous Grape Varieties to International Classics

One of the great strengths of DO Pla i Llevant is its impressive diversity of grape varieties. Winemakers here work with both indigenous, locally rooted grape varieties and internationally renowned varieties, creating a fascinating world of wines with a wide range of styles and distinctive personalities.

The Mallorcan grape varieties are particularly exciting, as they are closely connected to the island’s history and identity. Varieties such as Callet, Manto Negro and Prensal Blanc reflect the unique characteristics of their place of origin and make these wines true ambassadors of Mallorca.

Whether you prefer fresh, aromatic white wines, elegant rosés or expressive reds, DO Pla i Llevant offers an incredible diversity that continues to delight wine lovers time and time again.

Today, numerous wineries and winegrowers across the region are dedicated to further developing the quality and individuality of their wines. Traditional craftsmanship goes hand in hand with modern winemaking techniques and new insights.

The result? Wines with personality, a strong sense of place and a truly distinctive Mediterranean signature.
